Reality Television
This whole reality television phenomenon is really very sad in my opinion. I mean, it used to be that you watched television for the same reason you read books or watched movies: to escape. when life was getting to be too much to handle, you turned on the box, and switched off your brain kicked back and watched Tiswas or Knight Rider or whatever. You sat yourself in front of the idiot box, and escaped to leave behind all the rubbish that is everyday life for a little while at least. Now, however, you can't change the channel without landing on a "reality program" The Mole. Big Brother. Survivor. Tempting Slut Whore Island, or whatever it's called. everywhere you go, someone is touting a new reality show. all of a sudden, televisions are no longer escapist vehicles. Instead of escaping into fiction, people are now escaping into ...
.....reality, or stuff being touted as reallity but I won't go into that here.
Personally I can think of nothing that speaks more of the decline of the human race at the moment, maybe with the exception of politics.
It's one thing to kick back and chill out and escape into Terrorhawks they rock thay do extreame naughts and crosses, or Airwolf, that had a nifty blacksupersonic, rader-evading chopper futurocopter. But now, now to escape your boring, humdrum life you watch someone else's boring, humdrum life, how sad is that?
I guess i just like my fiction to be just that -- fictitious. and to see the wave of Reality Programming getting bigger and bigger, i can't help but wonder what that will mean for the future of television. hell, for the future of entertainment, period. shades of Survivor: The Movie come to mind.
Well that was actually a nice trip down memory lane wasn't it.
