2002 - The year that was
was? was what?
I had meant to post an entry about the year 2002 in review before it ended, and had meant to make up some resolutions and write about them on the beginning of the new year (hell, isn't it time to be breaking them already?) but I was too busy drinking beer before liquor and never having been sicker. Actually that's not true, I've been much sicker than I was on New Year's Eve. Once a long time ago when I was knee high to a grass hopper I spent all the christmas period on the couch being sick - must of lost a few stone that year.
Last year's resolutions were to lose weight and gain financial independence. I had hoped to be at the end of 2002 in a good position to move out. I do have the opportunity to partner with some friends, Craig had a great scheme to move up to Newcastle. The idea being a few of us to rent some premisis up there and crack on for a year. It would be great to be part of such a wonderful scheme rather than stuck at the olds. A year ago when I made my resolutions it was exactly what I wanted - or damned close. Unfortunatly I have just started a new job its well paid and offers some stability in my life, and it just seems a bit soon to be uping and leaving it after only a few months working here.
My resolution to lose weight will carry over from last year, I'll try to do this by eating out less - for reasons of both health and finances, even though I have just gone out for a curry, not a good start. I tend to make this decision once or twice a year and it usually lasts until the next meal. Right now I need to save so I expect the resolution to last at least until my next paycheck this time.
I also plan on going to more Metal gigs, I generally in the past haven't gone to many as most of my closer friends don't like to rock out to some full on metal madness and I tend to give in and go and do whatever they want to do, but this year I will try and get to more especially the local events as I know a lot of the people in the local metal sceen and its always good catching up with people I haven't seen in a while or meeting knew people - as my gran used to say "there are no strangers just people we haven't meet yet" which just goes to show how mad old people are. This one at least should be doable starting with the Winter Chaos event next Saturday.
Some may wonder why September 11th and the resulting war on terrorism is not my main topic of discussion for a wrap-up of 2002. The answer is simple. There's not much I can do about it. I can no more save innocent civilians from being killed by religious fundamentalists than I can save innocent civilians from being killed by American nationalists. Whether the soldiers wear uniforms or not, there's not a damned thing I can do about it. As long as we have political, economic, religious, and cultural structures that give some people power over other people, that power will generally be used for evil. Sorry kids.
